Representing or Digitizing?

Over 100 years ago, the telephone revolutionized communication. How? Simply by acting as a repeater – analog to analog. Voices weren’t converted into words & then re-presented in another voice or tone, you heard what was spoken.

I’ve been amazed at the past nearly 2 decades of handwriting-recognition attempts. Everyone in computing seems to think that converting handwritten words into type is a “next step.” It is not a “next”, it is much more a “last.”

Finally, computing is starting to take a step back. The iPad isn’t meant to be written upon, but there are many ways of doing so. Scribbling over screen-captures is a thing, especially in my line of work.

With the chunky HTC Flyer, and the svelte Samsung Galaxy Note, there’s finally an attempt to scribble away, something I’ve long thought is the better, simpler, more human option.

Update: Evernote is doing the unfiltered re-presentation by taking a picture of your handwritten notes.
